Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord and not for your masters, since you know that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward; you serve the Lord Christ.  Colossians 3:23-24

As we approach Labor Day, a time set aside to honor the hard work and contributions of people across various fields, it’s important to reflect on the biblical perspective of work. The Bible consistently affirms the value of work, not just as a means of livelihood but as a form of worship and service to God.

In Colossians 3:23-24, the author reminds us that our work, no matter how mundane or challenging it may seem, is ultimately for the Lord. This perspective transforms our daily tasks from being mere obligations to opportunities to serve God and others. Whether you’re in an office, teaching in a classroom, working in a factory, or caring for your family at home, your labor has eternal significance.

Martin Luther picked up on this theme as he reflected on the priesthood of all believers.  Since we all share in the same baptism, we share the same calling to serve God and neighbor, no matter in what station in life we find ourselves.  Whether we are the Pope or we are the janitor taking care of the church building, our service is to the Lord and it is a blessing.

Pope John Paul the II in his encyclical LABOREM EXERCENS, reflects deeply on the dignity of work as a basic human right.  Beginning with Adam and Eve in the garden, humans have a special calling to work that goes beyond simply making a living.  Because it is ordained by God, work has a dignity imbued by the basic structures of creation.  Pharaoh, when he enslaves the Israelites, violates that God-given right to dignity, and so God acts to liberate the people from the king’s oppression.

Labor Day offers a chance to pause and consider how we approach our work. Are we doing it with a heart that honors God? Do we see our tasks, big or small, as part of a greater divine plan? This weekend, let’s take time to rest, not only from our physical labors but also to reflect on how we can align our work with God’s purposes.

Prayer:

Creator of the Universe, we thank You for the gift of work and the opportunity to contribute to your creation. Help us to see our work through your eyes, as a service unto you and our neighbor. May we work with excellence, integrity, and joy, knowing that our ultimate reward comes from you. As we rest this Labor Day weekend, refresh our bodies, minds, and spirits, so we may return to our work with renewed purpose and vigor. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
